Wisp – Nrthndr (2005)

June 22nd, 2009

Genres genres genres. Some people listen to that, some people listen to this, but not that. And they think that everything else sounds the same. People who like to sound unique about their music listening habbits will pull out some random genres that leave you wondering if they’re making it up on the spot. IDM or “intelligent dance music” is just one of those genres. Probably one of the more artsy subgenres in the whole scheme of electronic music, it just sounds cool. Unpredictable switches, weird time signitatures, and generally abstract concepts are just some features of it. Big names include Aphex Twin, The Flashbulb, Boards of Canada, Autechre, Venetian Snares, and Squarepusher. If you’ve never heard of some of these artists and are curious, you should definately check them out!

I’ve been coming back to this album a few times over the past couple months. It’s a really nice mix of ambient and not too chaotic drumming that you get out of IDM, more in the vein of Boards of Canada. I’m not going to lie, the album art lead me to get this album and boy am I glad. The overall album sound is darker and sometimes upbeat with a videogame-esque sound (think 16-bit, not 8-bit). It seems the album is urban influenced and makes for good night music. There’s really no point in going through a track by track rundown when this is an album experience, not an iTunes buy a random song deal. Apparently this guy has been releasing free music before he put out this album, and it’s all available here. Just another great artist in a genre that most people will never listen to, but surely, it doesn’t have be this way for you! :)

iwrestledabearonce – It’s All Happening (2009)

June 4th, 2009

What do I even say about this band? I remember sitting on a music forum more than a year ago, and someone was freaking out about this band because of an “inspector gadget” breakdown (See 3:25 bottom video). So I grabbed the ep and holy shit, it was all downhill from there. I pushed my chips in on this band blowing up and look where they’re at. They got signed to century media and here we have this new album from the band that have a shirt that says “metal just got gay” in rainbow coloring.

DURKA

  1. You Aint No Family
  2. White Water In The Morning
  3. Danger In The Manger
  4. I’m Cold And There Are Wolves After Me
  5. Tastes Like Kevin Bacon
  6. The Cat’s Pajamas
  7. Pazuzu For The Win
  8. Black-Eyed Bush
  9. Eli Cash Vs The Godless
  10. See You In Shell

So, if you couldn’t tell by the song titles (the song with the Vs. gives it away), this is a “hardcore” scene kid cd, but more on metal side. But they really do mix a lot of shit on here. FIRST OFF, there’s a chick screaming. She’d destroy me in a growl off, which is incredibly HOT. She can sing too. The songs go back and forth from slow and fast, but it feels good. Sure, it may not make sense, but why should it? The breakdowns aren’t the generic chug chug, the keyboards and sound effects make it fun too. It’s a blast! Who even knows about the lyrics, I have no clue. She stated on the myspace long ago that they’re really personal to her and doesn’t plan to release them but whatever. I never got bored listening to this album unlike their EP which is a little stretched out.

For 1000 scene credits, you have to listen to this album. If you want to smile, listen to this album. If you wish to find the meaning of life, listen to this album. It’s shy of 34 minutes and will make your head bob (the hardcore way, duh). This is an album to dance to alone in your room, in the car, on a boat, in a plane, on a train, etc.

Mixtapes – The Art of Giving

June 2nd, 2009

Since I can remember, I’ve been making mix tapes. The more music you listen to, the easier they are to make. Making a mixtape can take 5 seconds to 5 hours, that’s what is so great about it. It’s a nice gesture to share what you’ve been listening to, send a message, or maybe even creep the fuck out of a girl you’re crushing on. Regardless, it’s a fun way to learn more about the music you listen to by paying attention the lyrics, the intros and outros, and just general tone. The reason I’m bringing this up is because of the mixtape community I’m in. I just received my mix from a guy in the United Kingdom and all the tracks included the word dead, knife, murder, or anything close to those. Some of the songs I’ve heard of before, some of them I had not. It was pretty cool for a mixtape, the packaging was just a random newspaper with the tracklisting wrote out on it. I won’t get into details of what I sent out, but I decided to share the mixtape digitally to encourage some sharing. Feel like making your own to share, please please please, share it with us.

city.isolates – mixtape for may pairings

The mixtape tells an abstract story… But I’ll let you decide. Meant to be listened to in one sitting in the proper track order. Mix length comes to almost one hour. Enjoy.

Interlude post – MORDECAIIIIIIIIIIIII

May 24th, 2009

Dear readers,

Penguins are in playoffs, unemployment is hard work, and punching glass windows has become my newest hobby. If you need something to pass the time, watch this music video. It also happens to be the name of one of the children from Children of the Corn 2. This is an attempt to brainwash you so you name your future son Mordecai. Listen to the whole song, it changes style a lot. Bree bree.

Asleep mid-sentence- the words fell apart.
No one is listening anyway.
This day will soon turn black
and my “wants and needs” will spill on me burning ashes.
I learned to be selfish today…
I learned to be alive.
These things I care for are for my personal gain
my personal happiness only.
Why should I sit in your chairs and satisfy your standards.
I’ve done it all before and I’ve confused myself a thousand times.
The tragic day that I call morality just doesn’t do it for me anymore.
The day will turn black and I will have Neither lived or died.
Asleep mid-sentence- my words fall to the ground.
Swept into this dreamland.
Economic satisfaction.
Never succeed.
But happiness has its place.
Justice will not lie in your corner.
Throw myself in the corner
We have nothing to complain about here.
Tragic day seems too peaceful to most,
spoiled ambitions turned my heart to black, black.

Living dreams, loving dreams,
awakening to what I’ve always dreamt of.
Living dreams, loving dreams,
awakening to what I’ve always dreamt of.
The familiar sound, the familiar sound of the lovely love
from the love of my life will keep the notes coming.
From the reciting of the show, from the Plip and Shevanel,
from the grind that annoys, and the sarcasm they all hate

Attack Attack! – Someday Came Suddenly (2008)

May 19th, 2009
Someday Came Suddenly

Someday Came Suddenly

Recently, I’ve discovered that I have a certain love for albums that perform variations of what I like to call “synthcore” (relating Synth-Pop/Punk with the various “-core” genres, as opposed to the old industrial subgenre).  So naturally, when I heard this album, I nearly fell out of my chair.

What we have here is rancid screaming (most of the tracks), addictive beats (Bro, Ashley’s Here) and melody punctuated by abrasive vocals (The People’s Elbow).  If you’re even remotely into the “light-hearted but heavy-hitting” style that Attack Attack! brings to the table, you’ll love this album.  Yeah, I said it.  If you like it a little, you’ll love it a lot.

What really caught me off guard is the lyrical content.  These guys are definitely Screamin’ For Jesus™.  There’s a lot of references to God, about forgiveness, sin, the Holy Ghost…  While there’s a lot of Christian “-core” out there, most don’t speak (scream) so directly about it.  While I’m certainly no theist, I find this at least refreshing.

This album has so many good tracks on it, each with at least one incredibly segment that’ll bring you back for more.  However, there’s one song that I think encompasses the album, the band… maybe even this style of the genre.

I present to you, Attack Attack! – Stick Stickly:

Notes:
-Opens up with a breakdown-styled introduction
-Transition hard into an up-beat synth segment, melodic singing
-Another transition to screech-guitar and screams
-Relatively mellow BREAKDOWN 1 (hardcore styling)
-Piano transition to drawn out synth, and back to the up-beat synth
-not so mellow BREAKDOWN 2 (hardcore styling)
-INSERT TECHNO BREAKDOWN/UP(?) (breakdowns usually consist of playing at half-time or so, this isn’t the case, but it still has that “broken, swinging wildly away from the song” feel)
-Autotune melody
-Ends on a “-core” note

Sick.

All of their tracks can be heard on Youtube (including their fantastic cover of “I kissed a Girl” by Katy Perry).  Definitely worth checking out.

In Fear and Faith – Your World On Fire (2009)

May 13th, 2009
Your World On Fire

Your World On Fire

I was referred to this band by listeners of some other band I was looking into at the time.  When I finally got around to checking these guys out, I’ve found they’re probably one of my new favorites.

Having released their EP Voyage in 2007, In Fear and Faith released this gem on January 6th, 2009.  So what does this album offer that any other post-hardcore albums do not?

-Liberal, but interesting, application of double-bass drumming.  Not overwhelming or overplayed in the least. (Click to 4:10 in the Youtube video of The Taste of Regret and listen until the end).

-A single, minor-key strum of the guitar that is allowed to reverberate a little longer than you’d expect.

-Fun vocals, both passionately sung/screamed but with a tinge of “sadly humorous” (The opening track’s “Yo ho, yo ho” and Live Love Die’s “oh my god!”).

-Quiet piano/strings that really add a lot.

-Fun and unexpected digital voice-breaking.  (Check out the video below of Strength in Numbers, click to 2:15 if you’re impatient, and listen until about 2:30).

The only downside to these guys is that there’s not much in the way of breakdowns or anything else that define the hardcore/metalcore genre.  It seems that between the sub-genres exists a place where people of differing tastes within the parent genre (”hardcore”) can meet and agree, but sometimes disagree even when the same sub-genre title is given to a new band.  If you’re looking for something to throwdown in your living room to, this isn’t it.  In Fear and Faith is one of the more “post”-leaning post-hardcore bands, focusing more on melody and flow.  But for everything they try to be, they very cleanly succeed.

If you’re into the post-hardcore scene, give these guys a shot.  You won’t be disappointed.

Solid Mas – The Show-Off Mixtape

Solid Mas - The Show-Off Mixtape

Solid Mas - The Show-Off Mixtape

So there’s this guy named Solid Mas, right? One day he was like, flying through the air and a bunch of nazi soldiers shot him down. All the nazi’s are like ‘yoo, you have to stay here and help us and stuff’ but he’s like ‘not EVEN’. But they make him stay anyway.

So he builds this really kick-ass metal suit, right? And all the nazi’s try to come and kill him. Oh yeah, they had him held captive and stuff too in a dungeon, that’s where he built the metal suit. So yeah, the nazis come and they’re like ‘yo you weren’t helping us at all, you were trying to fully dip out on us!’ And Solid Mas was like ‘nuh uh…’ but everyone knew he was lying. And the nazis start shooting at him like BANG BANG BANG and Solid Mas just lifts up his hand goes KA-BOOM! He shoots like a million nazis and then flies away.

Oh yeah, he raps too.

…And that’s how Solid Mas introduces himself on his Myspace.

Let’s start with a story.

Over the last couple years, I’ve (rather tongue-in-cheekingly) attempted to rap and freestyle.  To have such a grip on discourse as to be able to throw together words that rhyme and make it look so easy is quite a respectable feat.  I’ve always loved it.

Trying to better understand how the pros do it, I went in search of beats online.  I came across a few sites, and through these searches I found an amateur beat producer going by the alias “Memorecks” (Youtube).  Over the last couple years, I’ve gone in search of his new stuff to see how he’s doing, and always been impressed.  Lately I found he had played a big part in the creation of a mixtape for an artist hailing from Toronto, going by “Solid Mas”.  After hearing one track on his myspace, I decided I had to get my hands on his release.  I paypal-ed him some cash, and a short time later I had a link to download it.

It quickly became (and remains) one of my top played artists on my Last.Fm account page.

What makes good hip-hop “good”?

Beats, rhymes, flow.  Angles.  Approach.  Execution.  Build-ups and punchlines, but never losing that sense of “real”.

Mas obviously wanted to show the world that he’s ready for anything.  There’s a little of something for everyone on his tape.  All kinds of hip-hop from fast rhymes to rap ballads to club tracks that (if you’re paying attention) call out mainstream pre-canned beats/artists and the ignorant listeners that congregate around them.

The rhyme style and execution mostly relies on slow but smooth verbal movements, his voice lending to a feeling of clean and sharp words, not unlike Atmosphere.  The beats vary from quaint “old-school R&B”-style samples laid onto a simple but fundamentally good drum beat to haunting, echoing melodies, always using gratuitous scratching and a dash of early 90’s rap flavor that leaves this great taste in your mouth and makes you want to just hit the repeat button.

Mas only has a couple tracks up for listening on his myspace, and only recently have a couple been added to Youtube by Memorecks himself.  Below you’ll find “Puttin It Down” and “Who”, both are incredible tracks, though I highly encourage any readers to listen to “Margin” and “Vibes” on his myspace page.  “Vibes” contrasts very nicely with the tracks below to give a better idea of where he comes from and where he’s going.

Keep your eye on this guy.

“Catch me on the last lap, having the last laugh.”

An Introduction

May 10th, 2009

I, r0bVious, will soon begin posting specifically.

It’s somewhat important that I preface any future writings with a little bit of explanation on how I view music:

I have a sort of love affair for music consumption.  At times, it reaches this level of what could only be understood as a religious experience.  There’s something that music can convey that words, pictures, and actions alone cannot.  It almost seems like music can meld together so perfectly heart and mind, that no other medium can really be called an equal in execution.

What I search for in music isn’t necessarily technical prowess, though it’s impressive and raw musical talent can make or break a song/album/artist.  Nor is it a search for a sense of “getting the crowd moving”, though this too can certainly make things interesting.  Super emotionally-charged tunes don’t necessary make a track “good”.

It’s the gestalt.  It’s synergy.  These things (and many, many others) are constantly swirling together and pulling apart while music is played.  Music can and oftentimes will seemingly match your mood (or change your mood to match it).  Music always seems appropriate for whatever life circumstances you’re dealing with.  Music is our ability to say and hear what we have to say to eachother, but are unable to say with mere words.

…So that’s what attracts me to music, and that’s what I look for in artists.  As I write about things, I’ll most likely often use the word “Passion”.  I think that anyone can play an instrument with their hands, but not everyone knows how to play it with their hearts.

The Chariot – Wars and Rumors of Wars (2009)

Because if there’s blood on the roots
Then there’s blood on the branches

If you’ve never listened to The Chariot before, I don’t know how you can live with yourself. Once upon a time, there was a little band called luti-kriss. They released some eps, got on Solid State, then released a full length. The band decided to rename themselves for obvious reasons, and Norma Jean was formed. They made a special song with a guest vocalist, Aaron Weiss, “Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste.” Out of no where, the leader singer, Josh Scogin made an announcement that he would be leaving the band, but not music for long.

Norma Jean would go on to release other albums and go towards the melodic side of metalcore. Nothing is without a balance though, The Chariot was shortly formed after Josh left Norma Jean. I’d go as far to call them the Sonic Youth of metalcore. Expect feedback, noise, raw energy, countless memorable moments, and phrases that you’ll be finding yourself saying in your head, over and over. If there’s blood on the roots, then there’s blood on the branches… This band is one of the things that keeps the metalcore fresh rather than bands with predictable breakdowns, rehashed themes, and scratchy vocals. Fandom aside, they’ve got a new album that was just released May 5th by Solid State records.

  1. “Teach:” – 2:53
  2. “Evolve:” – 2:59
  3. “Need:” – 1:55
  4. “Impress.” – 2:12
  5. “Never I” – 3:28
  6. “Giveth” – 3:29
  7. “Abandon.” – 3:01
  8. “Daggers” – 3:43
  9. “Oversea” – 0:44
  10. “Mrs. Montgomery Alabama iii.” – 6:00

Mad props to them for this release since they’ve printed and hand numbered the first 25,000 copies. This album is barely a half hour long and packs a punch. The beginning of the cd isn’t exactly in your face like the others, but one minute in and things pick up, quickly. “Victory is such a lonely word” repeated over and over again to the solo chugging of guitar. The lyrics which can be read here, seem to be about today’s generation in America. I love how they draw from their Southern roots for their sound and themes. I think their last effort, The Fiance, was a stonger album, but this one is almost as solid. Check it out, if you don’t, you’re a moron.
